- SMA/RP-SMA Antenna Connectors for FPV Drones
SMA connectors are the most common type of FPV antenna connectors for drones. SMA/RP-SMA connectors attach by screwing together their outer and inner components. The main disadvantage of the SMA FPV drone antenna connector is its weight. At over 5 grams per connector, it is relatively heavy for racing drones. Their size also takes up a lot of space within the assembly. These FPV drone antenna connectors come in two versions: SMA and reverse polarity SMA (RP-SMA). This can be confusing because the two types look similar but are not compatible with each other. Many people have struggled with purchasing the wrong SMA FPV drone connector variant. Of the two, SMA is the more common, but it is always crucial to verify the type before purchasing an FPV drone antenna connector. The primary advantage of SMA connectors is their durability. When securely mounted (using zip ties or mounting brackets), they are very hard to break. The average SMA connector is rated to last at least 500 connection cycles. SMA connectors also offer the widest range of available antennas and allow pilots to use the same antennas on both VRX and VTX devices. They are also ideal for VRX antennas, as their screw-on attachment allows the antenna angle to be adjusted and secured in place.
- U.FL Antenna Connector for FPV Drones
The U.FL FPV drone antenna connector is the smallest of the three. Currently, this FPV antenna connector is used almost exclusively on VTX devices. Most U.FL video transmitters (including the ImmersionRC Tramp and TBS Unify) typically come with a removable U.FL to SMA adapter. This allows you to use both SMA and U.FL antennas on the same VTX. Due to its size and weight of under 1g, it is relatively fragile and prone to damage. U.FL connectors can also be easily pulled off the PCB during crashes. They have the lowest cycle rating, averaging 30 connection cycles. I recommend this FPV drone antenna connector for pilots looking to shave every gram off their drone’s weight. This connector’s small size also makes it excellent for micro FPV applications, such as Whoops.
- MMCX Antenna Connector for FPV Drones
MMCX antenna connectors are becoming popular due to their balance between weight and durability. The connector is rated to endure an average of 500 connection cycles. I would recommend this antenna connector to most pilots, but keep in mind space and placement within the drone frame.
